It is only that we don’t attempt to think

Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender.
The Moneylender, who was old and cunning, fancied the farmer’s beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the farmer’s debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal.
So the cunning moneylender suggested that they let providence decide the matter.
He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.

سالها پیش در روستای کوچکی در هند، کشاورزی بدهی زیادیبه یک نزولخوار داشت  . نزولخوار، که آدم پیر و دغلی بود ، چشم به دختر زیبای کشاورز داشت .بنابراین او معامله ای را پیشنهاد کرد.او گفت که اگر با دختر کشاورز ازدواج کند ، از بدهی کشاورز صرفنظر می کند .کشاورز و دخترش از این پیشنهاد وحشت کردند.
بنابراین مرد حیله گر به آنها پیشنهاد کرد که با آینده نگری تصمیم بگیرند.

او به آنها گفت که یک سنگ سیاه و یک سنگ سفید را در کیسه پولی خالی قرار می دهد. سپس دختر باید یک سنگ را از داخل کیسه بردارد.

1) If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father’s debt would be forgiven.
2) If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father’s debt would still be forgiven.
3) But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into Jail.
They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer’s field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the money bag.
The Moneylender, then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the money bag.
Now, imagine that you were standing in the field. What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?
Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:
1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.
2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the money bag and expose the moneylender as a cheat.
3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.
Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking.
The girl’s dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses. What would you recommend to the girl to do?
Well, here is what she did …
The girl put her hand into the money bag and drew out a pebble. Without Looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble strewn path, where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.
“Oh, how clumsy of me,” she said. “But never mind, if you look into the money bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.”
Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.
Moral of the Story: Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only that we don’t Attempt to think.

اگر او سنگ سیاه را برداشت، زنش می شود و از بدهی پدرش صرفنظر می کند.
اگر سنگ سفید را برداشت، نیازی نیست با مرد ازدواج کند و همچنان قرض پدرش بخشیده خواهد شد.
ولی اگر دختر سنگی برنداشت، پدرش به زندان خواهد رفت.
آنها در زمینی پر از سنگریزه که در مزرعه کشاورز بود،  ایستاده بودند. وقتی آنها صحبت می کردند، نزولخوار خم شد و دو سنگریزه برداشت.وقتی مرد نزولخوار آنها را برمیداشت، چشمان تیزبین دختر دید که مرد دو سنگریزه سیاه برداشت و در کیسه گذاشت.سپس مرد نزولخوار از دختر خواست سنگی از داخل کیسه بردارد. حالا تصور کن شما در مزرعه ایستاده ای.اگر بجای آن دختر بودی چه میکردی ؟ اگر میخواستی او را نصیحت کنی، چه می گفتی؟
تجریه دقیق،  سه احتمال را نشان می دهد:
- دختر از برداشتن سنگ خودداری میکرد
- دختر باید نشان می داد که دو سنگریزه سیاه در کیسه پول هست و حقه مرد نزولخوار را رو می کرد.
- دختر باید سنگ سیاهی برمیداشت و خودش را قربانی پدرش می کرد که از بدهی و زندان خلاص شود.
لحظه ای فکر کنید. داستان فوق با این امید که تفاوت بین تفکر جانبی و منطقی را ارزیابی کنیم به کار می آید.
مخصمصه ای که دختر در آن افتاده نمیتوانست با فکر منطقی سنتی حل شود. به عواقبش فکر کنید اگر دختر انتخاب کند. چه پیشنهادی به دختر دارید که انجام دهد؟
خب، این کاری است که دختر انجام داد:
دختر دستش را در کیسه پول برد و سنگی برداشت. بدون نگاه کردن به آن، با آن ور رفت و اجازه داد سنگ روی زمین پر از سنگریزه بیفتد، جایی که سنگ  بلافاصله در بین سنگهای دیگر گم خواهد شد.
او گفت: اه چقدر دست و پا چلفتی ام. ولی اشکالی نداره، اگه به داخل کیسه نگاهی کنید یکی دیگه هست از روی اون میتونید بگید کدوم سنگ رو برداشتم.
چون سنگ باقیمانده سیاه بود، باید تصور میشد که او سنگ سفید را برداشته.و از آنجایی که مرد نزولخوار جرأت نداشت به کارش اعتراف کند، دختر موقعیتی غیر ممکن را به نفع کامل برگرداند.
نکته اخلاقی: خیلی از مشکلات پیچیده راه حلی دارند. تنها به این خاطر است که نمیخواهیم برای فکر کردن زحمت بکشیم.
